We’ve put together seven fantastic ideas – one for every day of the week! We’ve chosen these free fun activities for a variety of reasons. Firstly, they’re free. Secondly, they’re quite open – you can adapt them for kids of different ages, or for larger groups (when friends come around). But, the most important factor in our choices is that they don’t just give your kids a fun time – they also help them develop essential skills; such as working together, confidence and creativity. These valuable life-skills will help your children tremendously in the future.

So go ahead! Try out some ideas! Remember – it’s all about having fun together. Relax the rules, allow some mess and turn off your phone. Show your children how important they are to you by spending quality time with them.

  1. A Free Version of “Movie Night”
  2. Why go out to the cinema when you can bring the cinema to you? Here are some tricks and tips to making this a fun-filled experience:

    • Pick a family-friendly movie
    • Arrange pillows on the floor – much more fun than the couch!
    • Prepare popcorn, coca-cola, and other snacks & drinks
    • Shut the curtains and turn off the lights to contribute to the atmosphere
    • For more fun, pick a word or phrase that comes up fairly often and shout ‘CHEESE!’ every time it’s said – see who shouts out first!

Not only is this version of ‘movie night’ free, but it’s also far more fun. Sure beats the cinema!

  3. Water Fights
  4. Isn’t it nice when the kids help with the household chores? Watering the garden or washing the car is an excellent choice. Get them in their swimming clothes and let them have fun with the hose!

You’ll be surprised at how often your kids will beg you to allow them to wash the car.

  5. Arts ‘n’ Crafts
  6. Having fun with arts and crafts is one of the free activities for kids which is pretty endless. Google for ideas or come up with your own!

You can buy supplies or just recycle items from around the house. You’d never believe how much they can do with a toilet paper roll, empty tissue box or egg carton. Check out the garden for more supplies; leaves, twigs or stones can be transformed into beautiful works of art.

Why not make it a competition – give each kid some supplies and see what they come up with! Or, decide on something you want them to make (somewhere to arrange their stationary, something to do with summer, a welcome sign for the cousins) and leave them to their imagination! You’ll be surprised at how original kids can be when the only restraint is their imagination.

Arts and crafts activities can be suitable for children of any age – although younger kids will need supervision, it’s a pretty essential tool to helping them develop their creativity and imagination. The key to making this a valuable learning experience is to leave it as open as possible – don’t tell them what to do, let them experiment and decide for themselves. Praising them afterwards and proudly displaying their masterpieces will also boost their confidence and self-esteem.

A day spent on an arts ‘n’ crafts project will not only save you money and give your kids a fun time but will also develop their creativity, something which all experts agree is one of the most important skills a child can have.

  7. Treasure Hunts
  8. Ahoy there, me hearties! Is that treasure ye landlubbers are after? Hoist the Jolly Roger and let’s cast off into the seven seas!

This is one of the free activities for kids that is fun with family or friends – or both! The more, the merrier, after all. Split up into teams and pick a captain for each team. Arm yourselves with pens and eight pieces of paper, and you’re off!

    1. Write on one of the papers, ‘Congratulations, landlubbers! Ye discovered the treasure!’ Find a fab place to hide it, together with a ‘treasure’ (food works best!).
    2. On the next paper, write a clue to the hiding place of the last paper. Hide this in a different place.
    3. Repeat Step 2 for all your papers, but keep out the last one. This one is the first clue for the other team!
    4. Once both teams have finished, it’s time to give over the first clue to each other. It’s now a race to solve each clue and find the treasure before the other team!

    Battle to the finish, landlubbers!

  9. Put on a Play
  10. Another great way to develop your children’s creativity and imagination is to encourage them to put on a grand performance. They can choose a book or fairy tale as the storyline, or make up their own. Let them go all out with costumes and props, and let them practice away. Giving them as little help as possible will boost their imagination and independence, and performing is a fun way to build their self-confidence.

When they are ready, clear space for the stage, set up chairs and gather an audience (it could be just you, or more if family/friends are visiting and your kids aren’t shy). Remember your camera!

Finally, sit back, relax and enjoy the show!

kids won't remember that fancy toy you bought for them, but they will remember the time you spent with them. kids won't remember that fancy toy you bought for them, but they will remember the time you spent with them.

  11. Make a Family Tree
  12. Ah, the good old family tree. Children love learning about their extended family, especially if there are relatives who live abroad and rarely visit. Clarifying the who’s who and discovering new branches of the family is super interesting, especially when there are stories and fun anecdotes involved.

They can then produce a creative display of the family tree. It could be just the basic drawing, or you can take it a step further and provide photos of each person, or even make it look like an actual tree. The possibilities are endless!

  13. Music Video
  14. This is one of the free activities for kids that you may not have thought of. We love this idea because not only do you have a fantastic time making it, you also have it for years to come! Each time you watch it, you’ll remember the fun you had.

It’s pretty easy to do. The first step is to pick a song – go with a nice family favourite.

Now comes the fun part. Take photos and videos of everyone in crazy poses, wearing different things – try to connect it to parts of the song. Look at various music videos online for ideas.

Once you think you have enough, it’s time to start putting it together. Windows movie maker is an easy, basic program; you’ll get the hang of it in no time. This Wikihow should get you started. Have fun adding special effects and captions. When you’re done, it’s time for the big showing!

These 7 free activities for kids are just a few suggestions from us, there are many more free things to do with your kids at home that don’t cost anything. Seriously, why splurge on exotic holidays or even expensive outings, especially when many times you will end up turning to short term loan lenders to pay for them. Taking out short term loans to pay for outings during the summer holidays is certainly not recommended. Its best to save up for these expensive trips before applying for a loan. We hope you enjoy these 7 free activities from Cashfloat!
