Where does the term quid come from?
The word quid is a slang term for the British sterling’s pound. The Oxford English Dictionary found a record of this term being used as early as 1661 (“his Quids were vanisht”, Peter Arentine). It used to be a nickname for older currencies – the sovereign and the guinea – but when those currencies were replaced, the quid transferred to the pound we have today.
So where does it come from? There are many different theories, but the one that most people agree on is that it originates from the Latin phrase quid pro quo – one thing for another. The monetary connotations of this phrase add credibility to the theory. You can read more about the etymology of quid here.
