For the first time in its long history, the BBC has been compelled by the terms of its new Royal Charter to reveal the salaries of its top earners. The government has forced them to reveal the salaries of stars earning over £150,000 a year. Consequently, the report has shown a considerable gender salary gap between their staff. The BBC has published the salaries of senior management for years. However, this was the first revelation of star’s salaries. Only two of the BBC’s ten high earners are women, while just seven women earn over £300,000 compared to seventeen men.

The figures in the report do not include stars who work for BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, nor those actors who work for the BBC but receive a salary through independent production companies, such as Matt LeBlanc and David Attenborough. The reported salaries are only the amounts paid from licence fee money, not the whole person’s salary. These may be more due to earnings from commercial activities or other broadcasters.

Who was the highest earner in the BBC?

Chris Evans, the former Top Gear presenter and Radio 2 DJ, earned £2.2 million last year.  Gary Lineker came in second with an annual salary of £1.75 million. Graham Norton received half the amount of Lineker, picking up between £850,000 – £900,000 last year. A considerable gender salary gap is quite apparent when you look at the salary of the highest paid female star, Claudia Winkleman who presents the favourite TV show Strictly Come Dancing. Claudia earns between £450,000 and £500,000. Close behind her, earning £400,000 , is Alex Jones of The One Show.

Prime Minister Theresa May spoke on LBC Radio about the report and said, “We’ve seen the way the BBC is paying women less for doing the same job…..I want women to be paid equally.” She went on to say that the gender slary gap would have remained a secret unless the government had not forced the BBC to publish the report. A spokesman for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn confirmed that plans to pay government sector workers no more than 20 times the salary of the lowest paid worker within the same company, would also apply to the BBC.

So what have we learned so far?
  • A considerable gender salary gap within the BBC has been revealed
  • The government compelled the Corporation to publish top salaries for the first time
  • The highest paid male earns 2.2 million compared to 500,000 for the highest paid female
  • Theresa May wants equal payment for women
  • What has the BBC said they would do about the gender salary gap?

Closing the gender salary gap

BBC director general Tony Hall said after being asked if female stars would now be asking for pay rises, “We will be working carefully on our relationship with our talent”. He has pledged to close the gender salary gap by 2020. He defended the high salaries by explaining that to give the public what they want they have to the pay the high salaries that stars could earn more elsewhere. Female BBC stars wrote a letter to Tony Hall demanding that the pay gap is closed and saying that they had suspected this for years. In return, he has promised that they will see a difference in the report next year.

The BBC gender salary gap is 10%, which is lower than the national average of 18%. Some people are blaming the pay gap on the fact that women are less likely to ask for pay rises than men. However, recent research last year showed no differences in the likelihood of asking. One thing that the survey did reveal was the fact that 25% of men were more likely to get the pay rise when they asked for it than women.

How much do BBC staff earn in a year?

Staff starting out at the BBC can earn as little as £16,000 a year. Life in the capital is very expensive, with rents and the general cost of living much higher than in other areas of the country. Lower paid female workers could have to turn to no credit check loans online instant approval payday loans if they had an emergency that their female salary could not cover. The pay gap in Britain stands at 18% which makes women much more vulnerable to having to rely on quick sources of credit such as payday loans, or short payday loans with no credit check.

So what conclusion can we draw about the BBC gender salary gap?

The gender salary gap within the BBC came as a surprise to many after the government forced the Corporation to publish the salaries of the top star’s earnings. Female stars have written to the director of the company demanding that they address these issues. He has promised to close the pay gap by 2020. This may lead to the BBC losing some of its top stars, as male salaries may need to be cut to keep to the budget. Women are more likely to need to take out same day loans uk than their higher earning male colleagues.
