For the first time in its long history, the BBC has been compelled by the terms of its new Royal Charter to reveal the salaries of its top earners. The government has forced them to reveal the salaries of stars earning over £150,000 a year. Consequently, the report has shown a considerable gender salary gap between their staff. The BBC has published the salaries of senior management for years. However, this was the first revelation of star’s salaries. Only two of the BBC’s ten high earners are women, while just seven women earn over £300,000 compared to seventeen men.

The figures in the report do not include stars who work for BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of the BBC, nor those actors who work for the BBC but receive a salary through independent production companies, such as Matt LeBlanc and David Attenborough. The reported salaries are only the amounts paid from licence fee money, not the whole person’s salary. These may be more due to earnings from commercial activities or other broadcasters.

Prime Minister Theresa May spoke on LBC Radio about the report and said, “We’ve seen the way the BBC is paying women less for doing the same job…..I want women to be paid equally.” She went on to say that the gender slary gap would have remained a secret unless the government had not forced the BBC to publish the report. A spokesman for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn confirmed that plans to pay government sector workers no more than 20 times the salary of the lowest paid worker within the same company, would also apply to the BBC.
